Make your first guide

Try this beta with made-up information. You do not need to pay to export a guide.

  1. Open a practice webpage. Use a page with made-up information. If you have the local test folder, double-click Start Practice.cmd. Otherwise, start with a ready-made template in the editor; that needs no practice server.
  2. Open the Guide Workspace extension. Choose Website, then Start new recording. Read what it saves first.
  3. Close the little menu. Press Escape. Click slowly, about one second apart.
  4. Changed pages? Open the extension again. Choose Website and Continue this guide. This button is in the extension menu, not on the webpage.
  5. Stop and check. Click Stop, then Open editor. Check every picture. Use Find missing picture if the counts do not match.
  6. Save a copy. Save edits, check the review box, then Export HTML. Open that file and follow Next step. Make picture bigger helps you see small details.

Common fixes

Cannot record this page: frames, custom/shadow controls, very complex pages, internal browser pages and Incognito are unsupported. Write a manual step or use a different practice page. Do not bypass browser restrictions.

No pictures: read the recording notice, slow down, and keep the chosen tab in front. A missing-picture warning is not a successful screenshot.

Export is gray: save your edits, finish or cancel the picture preview, and check the review box. Add a step if the guide is empty.

Keep a backup: Export .guide makes an editable copy. HTML and PDF are separate readable copies. Downloads do not update when the original changes.
