Tango alternative: Guide Workspace vs Tango

By Jason Ramirez, Your Friendly Developer. Published November 5, 2026. Updated November 5, 2026.

The fast answer

If you want file downloads and screenshot blurring without a per-user subscription, Guide Workspace does both free, locally in Chrome, with no account — the redaction is baked into the exported pictures themselves, pledged never to move behind a paywall. Tango's free plan shares up to 5 workflows by link, but downloads and blurring start on Pro, at $22 per user per month for one or two users. If you need a shared team library, in-app Guide Me walkthroughs, viewer insights, or desktop capture, Tango is the stronger product and this page says so plainly. One hard limit on our side: Guide Workspace is a beta for practice workflows, training material and SOP drafts — not live customer data.

What each tool is, and is not

Guide Workspace is a free Chrome extension that records your clicks on a supported web page and turns them into a step-by-step guide with screenshots you can edit, redact and export. Guides live in your browser profile. It is not a team platform, it has no cloud sync, no AI capture, and it only works on web pages in Chrome.

Tango is a commercial documentation platform. It captures browser workflows into screenshot guides hosted in a team workspace, and adds in-app guidance, viewer insights and desktop capture on paid plans. It is not a local tool: guides live in Tango's cloud behind an account, and the features most switchers want — file downloads and blurring — are paid features.

How rare is this combination?

Tango is not the only comparison that matters. Of the 43 tools listed as Scribe alternatives on AlternativeTo, checked November 4, 2026, about 29 are cloud subscriptions that charge per seat or per creator. Only 8 keep everything local with no account, and only about 5 include redaction free and about 5 include full exports free. A few other tools are local too, and this page does not claim otherwise. The point is the combination: local, no account, redaction baked in, and full exports free, all in one Chrome extension. Nearly every other guide tool gives up at least one leg of the four.

Guide Workspace is best for solo guides on your own device

Best for a solo operator, trainer or consultant drafting how-to guides in Chrome who refuses a per-user bill for downloads and blurring, and who wants files on their own device. Not for teams, not for desktop apps, and not for live customer data while it is in beta.

Tango is best for teams that guide users inside the app

Best for teams that share a workflow library, walk users through software with in-app Guide Me prompts, watch viewer insights, and capture desktop apps on Pro. Not for anyone who wants their guides as local files with no account, and its free plan is not for people who need downloads or blurring.

The worked example: one year, real prices

Take a solo consultant who needs PDF downloads and screenshot blurring — the two features that push Tango users onto a paid plan. On Tango Pro at $22 per user per month, that is $264 for year one. On Guide Workspace it is $0, because downloads and redaction are in the free extension. Planned Pro is $59 one time, if it launches at all.

A five-person team pays more for the collaboration Guide Workspace does not have: Tango team pricing starts at $15 per user per month billed annually, so 5 × $15 × 12 = from $900 for year one. That buys a shared library, in-app guidance and viewer insights. If your team needs those, the money is buying something real. If it does not, it is a subscription for features you already have free.

The exports pledge, in writing

Full exports are free, and they stay free. The self-contained HTML export, print to PDF and the editable .guide backup are in the free extension, and they will never move behind a paywall, never gain a watermark to pay to remove, and never be replaced by a hosted link that stops working when you stop paying. Your exported files live on your device, not on our server — there is no server.

This pledge exists because export paywalls are a recurring complaint in this category: people pay for a plan just to get their own guides out as files. A guide you made should be a file you own.

“But Tango is free too, and it guides people inside the app”

Tango Free is genuinely useful: up to 5 shared workflows, up to 10 users, shared by link. The catch is precise: downloads to PDF, HTML and Markdown and screenshot blurring are Pro features, so the free plan stops working the moment a guide has to leave Tango as a file or hide something private. And Guide Me is a real Tango strength Guide Workspace does not try to match — if people need to be walked through software live, inside the app, that is Tango's home turf.

On the beta concern: you are right to be careful, and we will not talk you out of it. Guide Workspace was tested with made-up information. Use it with sample data, check every picture, and cover anything private before sharing. If a workflow involves real customer records, it does not belong in this beta.

Guide Workspace Pro: $59 one time, only if enough people want it

Pro would add power features for weekly guide builders. It will never gate exports: full local exports stay free either way. Join the waitlist to be counted and to get one email if Pro launches.

How to choose

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Tango alternative?

Yes. Guide Workspace is a free Chrome extension that records step-by-step guides with screenshots, including redaction and file exports at no cost. It is local and single-user, where Tango is cloud-based and team-oriented.

How much does Tango cost per user?

Checked November 5, 2026, Pro is $22 per user per month for 1–2 users, and team pricing starts at $15 per user per month billed annually for 3+ users. Enterprise is custom priced. Guide Workspace charges nothing per user; its planned Pro is a single $59 one-time payment.

Can I download a Tango guide as a PDF for free?

No. On Tango's own feature tables, PDF, HTML and Markdown downloads are Pro features; the free plan shares by link and embed only. Guide Workspace includes HTML export, print to PDF and an editable .guide backup in the free extension.

Is screenshot blurring free in Tango?

No. Screenshot annotation and blurring are Pro features in Tango, and automatic PII detection and redaction are Enterprise. Guide Workspace redaction is manual and free, and the covers are baked into the exported pictures themselves.

Does Tango work inside other apps?

Yes. Tango's paid plans add Guide Me on-screen guidance and desktop capture, which Guide Workspace does not offer. Guide Workspace only records web pages in Chrome and produces a guide you keep as a file.

Is Guide Workspace ready for real customer data?

No. It is a public beta tested with made-up information. Use it for practice workflows, training material and SOP drafts, check every picture, and cover anything private before sharing an export.
